How We Help With Probate
When someone passes away, their estate often has to be opened in probate court before bills can be paid, accounts closed and property passed to the people who should receive it. That is true whether or not there is a will. Our office helps families through that process in Sumner County and the surrounding counties, from the first court filing to closing the estate.
Opening the estate. We prepare and file the petition to open the estate and have the personal representative appointed.
Estates with a will. We help the executor carry out the will and meet the court's requirements.
Estates without a will. When there is no will, Tennessee's intestate succession laws decide who inherits. We help the family understand who is entitled to what and ask the court to appoint an administrator.
Paying debts and final expenses. We walk the personal representative through notifying creditors and paying valid claims.
Transferring property and closing the estate. We help account for assets, distribute them to heirs or beneficiaries, and close the estate with the court.
